Baobab Institute

Baobab Institute

A local organization committed to accelerating progress in health and development around the world. The focus is on family planning and sexual and reproductive rights.

About us

Baobab Institute for Health and Development is a non-profit, non-governmental capacity-building organization.
It was officially created and registered in Senegal in June 2021 by renowned African leaders with long experience of working in health development with multilateral agencies, donors, governments, the private sector, partners worldwide and in sub-Saharan Africa.

At Baobab Institute, we advocate changing the international development model through the promotion of social justice, human rights and more equitable, affordable healthcare for all.

We believe that the potential for sustainability, innovation and scalability is far greater with the support and collaboration of a wide range of partners, including community and faith-based organizations, local non-governmental partners, academic institutions, social entrepreneurs, private sector suppliers and entities, and host country governments.

Baobab Institute for Health and Development covers the West and Central African region, with a particular focus on the countries of the Ouagadougou Partnership and French-speaking Africa. We provide a platform for greater participation of local actors in the design, implementation and measurement of these programs. Baobab Institute and its founding members believe in the centrality of family planning as an essential development intervention to safeguard dignity, guarantee human/women's rights and accelerate progress towards economic development and prosperity.

Our targets

Local NGOs

Bringing together the various private-sector and civil-society players to strengthen their actions in the field.

The government

Support the various public services to strengthen technical platforms.

The population

Enabling citizens to have access to quality protection and health services.

Our divisions

Baobab Institute is a platform that focuses on three efforts we believe are fundamental to the post-Covid-19 era, including localization, digitization and entrepreneurship for development. Its founding members include renowned champions of global health and sexual and reproductive health who have made significant contributions to recent advances in family planning in French-speaking Africa. We intend to build on this expertise and help accelerate the progress of the global family planning movement in the region.

Our priorities

Baobab Institute, an indigenous African organization, is committed to accelerating progress in global health and development, with a focus on family planning and sexual and reproductive human rights. It fosters local ownership and strengthens the capacity of local systems to deliver pro-development results at regional, national, sub-national and community levels. It also ensures that local actors have a greater voice and role in development.

Transformation

Global development is evolving rapidly.
The traditional model for delivering financial and technical assistance (TA) to low- and middle-income countries is being turned on its head, as donors look for ways to reach last-mile communities faster, and bilateral and private foundations push for local organizations to take the lead. We offer a common platform for the various players to facilitate access to funding and the upgrading of human resources.

Impact

Maximize development activities carried out by strong local organizations and the populations they serve.
Our aim is to increase the positive externalities by supporting local organizations to accelerate the implementation of sustainable solutions.

Health

Health is central to development and critical for Africans and their economies to thrive. We support health as a human right and promote last mile access to health care as a key step toward UHC. We strengthen health workers and the systems in which they operate. We commit to increasing the capacity of related sectors.

Digitalization

Strengthen local ecosystems for the digital transformation of healthcare and implement the development of a digital health policy as well as the digitization of primary healthcare. Our ambition is to democratize digital culture among the various development players.
